Bankruptcy Costs and Fees

When filing for personal bankruptcy there are several costs and fees involved. Bankruptcy fees are charged to cover aspects of the process such as administration costs and court charges.

Bankruptcy fees in England and Wales include -

  • A desposit of £450 is payable in all cases. This deposit is intended to cover the costs of administering the bankruptcy.

  • A court fee of £150. This fee is means tested and so in some cases, such as if you are claiming income support, you wont be required to pay.

  • If your case is being heard in the High Court then a free of £12 will be charged for the swearing of the statement of affairs.

Before filing to become bankrupt it is worth considering if a debt relief order is a more appropriate solution. Debt relief orders offer a cheaper alternative as they allow you to apply for personal bankruptcy without having to go through the full bankruptcy procedure.
